Okay, so I've just decided that my new favorite flowers are...Forget Me Nots! I suppose you can tell from the title of this blog.
The reason for this is an amazing talk by apostle, Dieter F. Uchtdorf and he taught us five very important things that we should "Forget Not" hehe Each of the five things is represented by one of the five petals of a forget me not flower :) <3
1. To be patient with yourself
You guys do understand that God is fully aware that you and I are not perfect, right? Well, do you also understand that the people you THINK are perfect, aren't? We spend so much time comparing ourselves to others, comparing our weaknesses to their strengths. These comparisons drive us to great expectations of ourselves that we can never live up too. As a result of this, we never celebrate our good efforts because they seem to be less than what other people do. It is part of our mortal experience that we have weaknesses. God wants to turn our weaknesses into strengths! HOWEVER, doing this is a LONG-TERM goal. One day all of our weaknesses will turn to strengths, and its okay to keep working on it but stop punishing yourselves for not being perfect now! We are so often endlessly compassionate and patient with the weaknesses of others but we need to remember to be compassionate and patient with ourselves as well.
2. We need to recognize the difference between a good sacrifice and a bad sacrifice
We need to ask ourselves "Am I committing my time and energies to the things that matter most?" Our Heavenly Father is MOST pleased when we sacrifice something good for something GREATER. (especially in an eternal perspective)
3. To be happy NOW
Sometimes we are so focused on "When I am married, then I will be happy." "When I live in Washington, then I will be happy." But we need to be happy now! When we are so focused on our "golden tickets" or some distant time in the future to be happy we miss the beauty and wonder of the forget me nots. The little things that are easy to overlook and pass by waiting for a rose or other exotic flower to come instead. We forget the simple pleasures in life and making the most out of today, realizing that today is a gift and that is why we call it the present. ;)
4. The 'why' of the Gospel of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Often time we get so bogged down with the what and the how's of the gospel. "What do I have to do to prepare this lesson for Relief Society? What do I have to do to get the sisters ready for this service opportunity?" and "How am I going to teach this lesson? How do I get my point across most effectively" Do not forget the WHY. When we understand and remember the why of the gospel, we realize that the gospel is not burden or a prison, its a joy and a delight and it makes us FREE. When we remember the why, it turns our mundane acts of obedience into holy acts of consecration.
5. That the Lord loves you
YOU ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN. "No matter how dark your days may seem, no matter how insignificant you may feel, no matter how overshadowed you may be. Your Heavenly Father has not forgotten you. In fact, He loves you with an infinite love. God loves you because you are his child. He loves you even though you feel lonely and you make mistakes. The love of God and the power of the gospel are redemptive and saving, if you will only allow his divine love into your life it can dress any wound, heal any hurt and soften any sorrow. You are closer to heaven than you suppose. You are destined for more than you can possibly imagine." Yeah, I loved that part so much I just straight up quoted it.
